Set up Ubuntu for xrdp
First step is to install Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) server xrdp onto the Ubuntu Desktop.
sudo apt install xrdp
Then we need to enable xrdp to start after reboot in order to run the remote desktop sharing server.
sudo systemctl enable --now xrdp
Finally, we need to open port 3389 in the firewall for incoming traffic
sudo ufw allow from any to any port 3389 proto tcp
Use Windows Remote Desktop Client
Find the IP Address of your Ubuntu Desktop on your Local Area Network (LAN), and recall the username and password you used when creating your Ubuntu Desktop.
For my home server, I recently setup a home server using UnRaid. I have a Ubuntu 20.04 virtual machine that I can access using this method.
I enjoy gaming on a Windows laptop, and this method gives me a method to have a near native Ubuntu 20.04 desktop experience on my LAN, with the convenience of remote virtual machines.
